Explore the Sites at Lewis and Clark National Historical Park

Over 200 years ago, the Lewis and Clark expedition made its end on the Oregon Coast. After 4,000 miles of traversing across the states, they turned around right here in Seaside. Today you can see various sites from the historic journey along the Oregon Coast. A commemorative statue of Lewis and Clark is located just steps away from our inn on the beach. The Seashore Inn is also less than half an hour from the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park in Astoria, Oregon. Explore history, spend a day at the beach, and eat delicious seafood in Seaside during your next Oregon vacation.

The Salt Works

Located right here in Seaside is a replica of the rock cairn Lewis and Clark’s crew set up for salt processing over two centuries ago. Today the site is next to a residential area next to the promenade, just a few blocks from our inn. The salt they processed at this camp was an essential part of preserving the meat for their journey home. Visiting the replica cairn and the commemorative statue in Seaside is only the beginning of your journey through history.

Ecola State Park

Ecola State Park is home to the Tillamook Head trail, which is the same path Lewis and Clark took near the end of their journey. After two years of traversing through 16 states, William Clark marveled at the view stating, “I behold the grandest and most pleasing prospect which my eyes ever surveyed.” The view he was referring to is the stunning vistas along the coast of the Pacific Ocean. The site is truly something to behold, and we recommend checking it out for yourself before you head to the Lewis and Clark National Historical Park.

Lewis and Clark National Historical Park

Take the short drive to Astoria and see a replica of Fort Clatsop, the winter encampment of Lewis and Clark. You can find an interpretive center and many other trails and sites here. Once Lewis and Clark set up camp at Fort Clatsop, they set out to explore the area to document scientific discoveries, survey the area, and create maps. The Clay Pit Pond trail is a short walk that is easily accessible from the Fort. There are various trails and sites that can be explored at this historic park; find the best hike for your interests here
