Oregon Razor Clam Season is Here!

Oregon razor clam season has arrived once again in Seaside, and the beaches are already full of adventurers looking to dig up the best clams for dinner. This unique activity has become a favorite for locals and visitors since clamming is fun, challenging, and ends with a delicious reward. The Seashore Inn on the Beach (as the name suggests) offers direct access to the beach where you can find the best razor clamming in the state. We even provide complimentary clam guns and nets at the front desk so you can start digging right away.

Where Can I Find Razor Clams?

The sandy beaches from Tillamook Head to the Columbia River are the most popular spots for clamming on the Oregon Coast since 95% of clams are dug here. Stay at The Seashore Inn, and you will have direct access to the beach and a world of clam digging. Make sure everyone has an up-to-date shellfish license before heading out to the beach!

How Do You Find an Oregon Razor Clam?

Now that you know where to look, you will need to know how to find these elusive mollusks. The ideal time to start looking is hours before the low tide. The water will reside, leaving behind softer sand. It’s here that you need to look for “clam shows.” These are areas where the razor clam has burrowed into the sand. These will look like a dimple, doughnut, or keyhole.

You Found a “Clam Show” Now What?

There are a few different ways to catch a razor clam. One way is if you have a clam gun, you will quickly jam it two feet into the sand and angle it slightly toward the ocean. Once done, you pull it out, empty the sand, and see if you trapped the razor clam. The clam gun is kind of like a giant version of taking a soil sample. The second way is to be quick with a shovel. Here you would dig out the razor clam. However, they are speedy, so any hesitation will result in disappointment.

It’s important to note that you should toss it into a bucket once you catch a razor clam. If you forget, they will dig back into the sand, and it is gone.
